Ben has travelled extensively through Europe, the Far East and North America in a restless search to discover an outlet for his exceptional talent for making. From his established studio base in the Worcestershire countryside he is now producing stunning works, with a high degree of functionality, turned in classic hardwoods fused with the dynamic of synthetics. Each piece produced in his studio-workshop as an aura of visual perfection, in essence sculpture with the added element of purpose.
This desire for a purity of form initially led Ben to the work of Japanese bowl makers, where he began to examine their methods of working wood. Their philosophies include the indivisibility of beauty and utility, and respect for chosen materials and their place in the natural world, art being integral to their way of life. In Zen Gardens the Japanese embrace the idea of simplicity of design by the thinking that if something is simple, but still beautiful, there is more room for you, the viewer. This principle is also apparent in their bowl making, where the initial simplicity of form allows for a lifetime of wear which is inherent to the aesthetic. Applying these principles to his own work, Ben is committed to creating something both beautiful and practical.
His exploration of the Japanese art aesthetic has increased his motivation to understand their techniques and ideas, especially those involving surfaces and coatings, allowing him also now to produce distinctive works of art in their own right. Ben is focused on creating works with natural simplicity and clarity of form, infused with hues of ‘liquid light’ and colour.

Turned from a very rare piece of Spalted Horse Chestnut wood. This bowl is given its beautiful colouring by the minute funguses that grow in the grain of the tree when it is at the end of its life. These funguses cause the Browns and Blacks that you see here in the grain. Topped off with a Gold and Silver rim to give added strength and visual perfection, then lined inside with three coats of the super clear resin. Sat on a hand turned coloured resin foot for stability and poise. £950, Size H= W=
Crafted from one of my favourite woods, this Cherry Wood Bowl has fantastic detailing and splits that give it lots of unique character. The rim is made up of a combination of super clear resin with a purple dye added to give the beautiful Smokey effect. Sat on a hand turned coloured resin foot for stability and poise. £440, Size H= W=
This Vase was made as a commission for a client who had an old Pear tree that had to be felled. Since the tree had been on her family farm for her whole life it would have been such a shame to just burn it all. I was commissioned to make this vase for her so that she will always have a piece of that old Pear tree. I used a deep green resin to complement the colour of the wood and echo the life it once had. Sat on a hand turned coloured resin foot for stability and poise. £650, Size H= W=
Turned from another very rare piece of Spalted Beech, you can see the fantastic colours that run through the wood. This beautiful effect is caused by a microscopic fungus growing in the grain of the tree at the end of its life. If the free is found and dried out correctly you can stop the fungus developing into rot and use it to your advantage. I have used a super clear resin with a stunning ocean blue dye mixed together to contrast the pale wood grain. Sealed inside with three coats of the super clear resin to give strength and a maintenance free finish. Sat on a hand turned coloured resin foot for stability and poise. £1650, Size H= W=
This is one of my all time favourite woods due to how fantastically it splits! It allows me to maximise the effect im aiming to get by adding the resin to the splits and cracks. The wood itself has a beautiful grain that has a gentle wave to it much like a horses main. I have used a solid Red resin with this piece so that it throws a strong red ark of tight when kissed by sunlight. Sat on a hand turned coloured resin foot for stability and poise. £950, Size H= W=
